Bobby Avey

Born and raised in the Poconos region of Pennsylvania, the home of many noted Jazz musicians, Bobby Avey was first introduced to music by his late father, Jim Avey, a local musician. He began piano lessons at age five. At the age of 15, Bobby's father taught him how to read from a “fake book” (of standards from the “Great American Songbook”). Seeing music in this new way sparked Bobby’s interest, and in the following year, he began studying jazz.

Upon graduating high school, Bobby Avey received a scholarship to attend Purchase Conservatory of Music, in Purchase, NY. Currently a senior, he has studied with Dave Liebman (a Poconos resident), Hal Galper, Phil Markowitz (another muisican who lives in the Poconos), and Charles Blenzig among others. He is a past winner of the Downbeat Student Music Awards in the Original Composition category and has also performed original music with Jon Faddis in Manhattan. His influences range from Wynton Kelly to Richie Beirach to Messiaen.

Bobby’s first CD recording, "Vienna Dialogues," a remarabkle duo CD in collaboration with Dave Liebman, was released on ZOHO on October 10, 2006. This project features the songs of Mendelssohn, Brahms, Chopin, Mahler, and other 19th century lieder composers. Bobby, a recent winner of the Presser Award Scholarship given annually to one student enrolled in the Purchase Conservatory of Music, was also recently named Yamaha Young Performing Artist on piano for 2006.

This past summer, Bobby worked as a pianist on the QE2 cruise ship for 3 1/2 months. Presently, he resides in White Plains, NY where he is finishing up his final year of studies at the Purchase Conservatory of Music. At the conclusion of his undergraduate studies, Bobby plans to move to Manhattan, and pursue music profes
